Hi Plant Pals!
It can be overwhelming deciding on what plant baby you should take home. So many questions come up, especially for first time plant owners. We put together a list of 5 Tips to help make the decision a little easier. Here are some things to think about before buying the perfect plant.
Doing some research on what possible light conditions and water maintenance it will need, will help you decide if you have the perfect conditions in your home or office space. Most plants require bright direct or indirect light but not all of them. And knowing this will help you decide on where you should place that plant to get the best results.
2. Knowing if it’s a poisonous plant
Most people these days have fur babies. If you know you have a pet that possibly might be curious and might try to snack on it, making sure it’s safe to eat will protect the ones you love. Also knowing if it’s poisonous might help you decide where you should put it, keeping it away from those who shouldn’t reach it.
3. Having the perfect pot for the plant
Having the perfect pot for your plants is crucial for its overall health. Checking for a drainage hole at the bottom is a must. Plants almost always need a drainage hole so that the roots can get some oxygen. It’s important to have time for your plant to air out so that you don’t keep unwanted moisture on the plant. Having too much moisture will create fungus, mold and is the perfect environment for pests.
4. Understanding what soil conditions your plant needs
Most plants will be in regular everyday soil, but not all plants. Some require “chunky” soil mixes for plants to help give more aeration so that they don’t stay overly wet and die. Others might go through their water quicker so using clay Leca balls, help retain moisture longer. Knowing the soil conditions will definitely add to the success of the plant.
5. Checking for pest
Unfortunately pests love to call our plant babies their home. Double checking under the leaves and around the stems for bugs is important. If you don’t check for pests you could potentially spread them to your other healthy plants. If there is a plant you absolutely love but you see it’s infected, you can have a plant cleaning routine for brand new plants, before you introduce them to your healthy ones.
